.xxx "sex domain" given final approval

From BBC: ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has given a final approval for the creation of a top-level domain for Websites dedicated to pornography. A top-level domain is the last label in a full domain name, such as .com, .net, .org, or in this case: .xxx. Will this allow law enforcement agencies to better police the sites for illegal material and make it easier for parents to filter out inappropriate content? Does it simply legitimize Internet porn, inviting pornographers to push even further? Leave us a comment and tell us your opinion.

  1. If they're going to allow .xxx domains, I think it should be required that ALL websites with adult material be forced to register as a .xxx. Doing so would make it easier to enforce laws and block adult content from underage viewers.

  2. I have to agree with you. I am glad that this got passed thought, it was a step in the right direction. I think that once it starts to become popular it will be mandatory. At that time new laws can go into effect to help regulate viewers and other things.

  3. It's possible that something like this may occur in the future. However, there are some problems that go along with it. For one, many current sites would be forced to change their domain name. Consider: there is a sex.com, sex.net, sex.cc, sex.org, etc. Moving all pornographic sites to .xxx domains would limit the total available name spaces. This will result in the Internet porn industry fighting against any such move. I'm not saying I don't believe it should happen, I'm only saying that it won't be easy to make it happen.

  4. RD, you are absolutely correct. Trying to mandate all pornographic sites to a .xxx domain would be a long battle that many current site holders are going to fight against. I think that eventually the process for this will happen but the domain changes will not happen overnight. The benefits of doing so would be worth the battle and effort to get it done in my opinion though. The biggest benefit would be to better protect youth from being able to view these sites.

  5. an .xxx domain will help in several areas. It will allow search domains easier parameters for setting parental controls. This is a testy area for most, as I am sure will unfold in the many battles it will go through before final ratification or permancy takes place. A great step toward controlling some of content on the internet. Which brings up a point. I myself play online games, in which in some cases, places the online user in a general chat room. (yahoo games is a good example). While in that general game room, many many "bots" post random ads and in most cases of a sexually biased nature. What will this .xxx domain do to help that?
