The Implications of Bin Laden's Death

--Russ Stover
Midnight May 1, 2011
Osama bin Laden was killed by American forces in a mansion in a suburb of Islamabad, Pakistan. Before all the chest thumping and backslapping let me say this: Wait and see. The killing of bin Laden will have a profound effect on Al Qaeda and the Global War on Terror, US-Pakistan relations, the Taliban, and of course Al Qaeda affiliates all over the world. We delivered a devastating punch to Al Qaeda, but while down they may not be out. Now we all have to brace for the counter-punch. There will be increased attacks on our forces with IEDs and other means, but what I truly fear is another 9/11 style surprise attack. And instead of New York, LA, or DC which are prepared for it, it will be in some small town, a place right out of Norman Rockwell. Remember the story of the Zen master:

In this village, a little boy is given a gift of a horse. The villagers all say, "Isn't that fabulous? Isn't that wonderful? What a wonderful gift."

The Zen master says, "We'll see."

A couple years later the boy falls off the horse and breaks his leg. The villagers all say, "Isn't that terrible? The horse is cursed! That's horrible!"

The Zen master says, "We'll see."

A few years later the country goes to war and the government conscripts all the males into the army, but the boy's leg is so screwed up, he doesn't have to go. The villagers all say, "Isn't that fabulous? Isn't that wonderful?"

The Zen master says, "We'll see."

So right at this moment with all the cheering and thrill ringing in my ears I'm going to take the Zen master's philosophy to heart: "We'll see."

  1. Excellent work! Very good post, well cited that what we need now is to prepare for the counter, and to keep our eyes focused! Great work CNJ Team.

  2. I agree with this entire post, and the Zen master example was definitely on point. A motto that I follow is to "Never count your chickens before they hatch". In other words even though this victory (in our eyes) has finally happened it may not be over yet. They've already found something that resembles some type of explosive at a bridge in Colorado that leads to where the Navy Seals live and train. While this accomplishment is definitely something that we've all been waiting to occur, we definitely have to be on our P's and Q's as far as counter-attacks go. We as civilians don't know what can of worms were possibly opened by his death.
