In the future will the communication skills amongst law enforcement officials be enhanced by the continual creative and innovative technology products, software and other inventions which are making access to details and evidence quicker and efficient? Will solving problems be a situation where the criminal investigations are so complex, the specialists of the future are individuals who can out think the criminal of this time and years to come.

In previous articles I discussed the concept of the Investigative Psychologists programs which some of the larger police departments are putting together to use such as the ability to profile sexual offenders and other serial habitual offenders. The complexity of the profiling of criminals can be difficult at best, therefore, it takes an individual who can not only profile a criminal but solve the crime in which the criminal committed the crime.

The superiority of today’s criminal has to be matched by that of the law enforcement official. It takes ingenuity, competence, intelligence and common sense to out think the criminal who commits heinous crimes. These crimes involve sexually assaulting and murdering children and so many other crimes, minor to major.

How good is the current law enforcement official at solving the numerous problems they are faced with when investigating a crime? This is just one of the issues that will be address in this article. Problem solving equals competence and if the law enforcement official cannot solve the facts and clues which are presented to them, then the resolution of the case is at question.

In the future a competent law enforcement official needs to have the common sense so when they are confronted with complicated issues, their critical thinking kicks into gear and they move to the next level of the investigation. Some law enforcement officials compare the investigative process as building a house. If the foundation of the investigation is solid the investigation will be structured in such a manner that the truth will be easily identified.

In ascertaining what the future holds when a law enforcement officer has to solve problems the law enforcement official must turn to forensics which either support or disprove the law enforcement official’s theory of the case.

When law enforcement officials find that their investigation is going nowhere and the biological and physical evidence provides no leads the law enforcement official needs to begin eliminating the problems identified in the investigation. Once these problems are resolved the investigation can then move forward. Sometime eliminating problems in an investigation is not as easy as it seems. Law enforcement officials need to understand what problems they are faced with and find intelligent strategies to eliminate them as soon as possible.

A law enforcement official who is competent and intelligent and approaches the investigation with a systematic ideology the problem can be resolved. Being logical and reasonable about how to deal with a problem will allow the investigator to resolve problems quickly and efficiently.

If the law enforcement official is able and capable of resolving the problem, they need to ascertain what investigative solutions are available and then implement them. An experienced law enforcement official will identify problems associated with his investigation as he/she will recognize clues which have been present in other investigations.

Sometimes when examining and evaluating the biological and physical evidence the law enforcement official must ask questions of the experts who identified the evidence, collected and analyzed it. Sometimes biological and physical evidence is unique, complex and technical and needs clarification in how this evidence links to the potential perpetrator. Moreover, how the evidence can be used by the investigator.

The law enforcement official must approach the case utilizing alternative hypothesis. The law enforcement official’s initial hypothesis may not be their final hypothesis. During the investigation the facts of the case may change to such a degree that the law enforcement official has to be flexible and intelligent enough to adjust to the facts which are located along the way. The alternative hypothesis must be reasonable and logical and have substance.

In the communication world innovative and creative technology systems which are being developed have become advantages to the law enforcement official in identifying, locating and apprehending the sexual offender. This communication technology has the ability to locate persons of interests by tracking their location e.g. a cell phone which has the feature GPS. Problem solving and communication allows the investigator to quickly come to a conclusion about the crime, the potential witnesses and sexual offenders.
The future in law enforcement forensics is beginning to change the methods and techniques in the communication and problem solving area. The development of the social networking systems, (from the utilization of Skype to Facebook) the new ways to interpret DNA is the future in apprehending and convicting individuals who commit crimes against children.

Imagine the non-abusing sexual offender who supports the sexual offender, rather than the alleged child victim has telephone contact with the offender by telephone, this will make things happens quickly. Moreover, this will assist the investigator who is in the process of apprehending the sexual offender. There are communication tools which can assist law enforcement in solving the problem of where the sexual offender is hiding from the law enforcement official. Solving these types of problems can minimize the problem areas and assist the law enforcement official in ascertaining the truth.

Tomorrow, the numerous communication options available to law enforcement need further review, examination and evaluation. In reference to the numerous techniques and methods in solving the many problems law enforcement faces in their investigations are now being resolved by systematic and logical processes. The future has many exciting procedures and tools which will assist law enforcement in defining how any type of criminal investigation should be handled. The investigations by law enforcement have never been so complex and the assistance of individuals and organizations that have the tools to assist the law enforcement official has never been in such demand.
