Militias are Alive and Well in Georgia

by Russ Stover
They weren’t foreign-born, they were born in the USA. They didn’t have foreign ties, they were good old boys from Georgia. They weren’t young radicals; they are senior citizens, no less angry at the system. But instead of occupying a park, they planned on killing people; a lot of people.
Frederick Thomas, 73, of Clevland, Ga.; Dan Roberts, 67, of Toccoca, Ga.; Ray H. Adams, 65, of Toccoca; and Samuel J. Crump, 68, of Toccoca, were arrested yesterday for plotting to use explosives, silencers, and the deadly poison ricin to attack American citizens and government personnel and officials, according to the complaint made public by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia. All four are members of a fringe militia group.
Today the four appeared in court and were shackled despite their age and real or feigned deafness even though U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan Cole was using a microphone. The self-named “covert group” was infiltrated by the FBI who recorded several of the meetings including one in April where Adams said, “The first ones that need to die is the ones in the government buildings.” The retired USDA lab tech added, “When it comes down to it, I can kill somebody.” Their plan included assassinating government officials using silenced rifles but even more threatening was their professed desire to make ricin and disperse it in Washington, DC, Newark, NJ, Atlanta, GA, Jacksonville, FL, and New Orleans. They were going to spread it on highways and let the cars distribute it for them. The group had started surveillance on the IRS and ATF offices in Atlanta in May an discussing a list of needed firearms and explosives.
Nederlands: Ku Klux Klan leden en een brandend...Image via WikipediaMy take: I think the investigation will turn up some things about the group that will come as a surprise to their friends and family. Links to other militias and the Ku Klux Klan would not be out of the profile, but as these groups have lightened up they may not have been radical enough for the suspects who decided to take matters into their own hands. Searches of their computers will turn up the usual conspiracy theory claptrap. How many more terrorists lurk around fireplaces in farmhouses, in the corner booth of the coffee shop? Kudos to the FBI for remembering not all terrorists wear turbans, some wear trucker caps too.
