A child growing up in America will think about what they want to be when they grow up. Some children shoot for the stars and dream of being an astronaut, fireman, doctor, law enforcement officer, and so forth. Others believe they will be a judge or the President of the United States of America.
Jason Hope, author of “Top Professions Kids Want to be When They Grow Up” (2011, January) created a list of the top ten professions that kids 10 and under want to “be when they grow up.” Hope provided the following list in order:
  1. Astronaut
  2. Professional Athlete
  3. Superhero
  4. Firefighter
  5. Spy
  6. Doctor
  7. Lawyer
  8. Dancer
  9. Police Officer
  10. Veterinarian

In theguardian.com an article called, When I grow up, I want to be … Childhood dream jobs” stated:

Some 69% of 3,000 parents surveyed admitted they had failed to follow their dream career path. But as they support their children in reaching for their (very different) dream careers, one generation on, parents said they rated job satisfaction and happiness as more than twice as important as wealth.

In many ways everyone has dreams at an early age of what they want to be when they grow up. Adults, who have lost their jobs sometime along the way or changed careers, still don’t know what they want to be. Still there is this strong influence during someone’s lifetime which may cause someone to pursue their dream.
With the major conflicts occurring in today’s political world children have to be confused about wanting to be a politician, the attorney general, and the President of the United States.
The role of parents has never been so important when it comes to the immigration, health care, unemployment, food stamps, contraception issues, and so forth in discussing these issues with their children, depending on what is age appropriate. Finding out that because of President Obama’s decisions, the Democratic and Republican Parties decisions to not work together, their father has lost his job, they will have to move out of their home, change the way they eat, switch schools, and so forth.
Children in their innocence, dream of being someone famous and then something in their life makes them change the profession they once decided to be. This author always wanted to be a police officer. It became a reality because I wanted it, worked for it, and got it. I never lost focus, no matter what politicians were doing.
Today’s youth have so many opportunities to become who they want, but for a very high price. Recently, Michael Huckabee had a show with many students who are looking for jobs. Some of the students had incurred debt of up to 200,000 to receive an education which has proven to date to be of no assistance of them obtaining a job.
How is it that a child’s dream of once they grow up and becoming a doctor, lawyer, and so forth, has turned into such a nightmare? According to HowToSaveMoney.com, in 2011 there were 45,753,078 on food stamps in America. The growth of the politician’s failure to control the borders, the demand for jobs, when there are none, the need to feed your family when you can’t has changed the way children see their future.  Maybe those in charge of what happens in America will take the time to change to understand that their decisions are affecting some child’s dream. Is it worth it?
