Understanding Sexual and Technological Addictions. Are You Or Your Children Already Addicted? Part XXV

By Lawrence W. Daly, MSc

“Innocence plays in the backyard of ignorance.”
Proverbs Quotes

It seems there have been an abandonment of common sense and a plan for the future when it comes to technological and sexual addiction issues. The people don’t want to hear there are negative aspects to being addicted to technology usage and sexual themes. In order to move forward with obvious abandonment society needs to take a step back and reevaluate what is transpiring in the use of creative and innovative technology.

There is an attack on adaptability in that society is so enthralled by the new toys and their new features, they have adapted without understanding what the harm may be to individuals who fail to rethink their position.

Those who are critical of the new technology may have some merits to their argument. The formula is simply i.e. new technology + Internet + sexual “pleasure zones” equal a new class of addicts. The criticism then seems to have a foundation for their beliefs. The formula doesn’t always apply to individuals who use the new technology and the Internet for business and educational purposes. Not everyone will turn out to be addicts, but what are the safeguards which have been put in place to stop the possibility that people won’t turn into addicts?

The studies and research which has been accomplished in reference to these addiction concerns to date is minimal and every day a new techno gadget comes out with new Internet access to the three main social networks i.e. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The millions and millions of individuals who visit these websites don’t see the ground work which has been laid for them to come back if not on a daily basis, but on an hourly basis.

Some individuals have surrounded the exchange or posting of information which seems redundant, irrelevant, too informative, and so forth. The rewards seem to surround the emotional security they receive by posting that they are headed to the restroom and will be back in a few minutes to post some additional information.

There is a conviction by those who live and breathe each day that the purpose of the social networks are relational is confusing. The question is what else these people would be doing if they didn’t have their computers or iPhones to obtain access to one of their favorite social networks.  Society has moved from being active to being sedentary so finding themselves with additional time, what would society do without the new techno gadgets or access to the Internet? The purpose of the Internet seems to be utilized for business, educational, social, research, advertisement, and so many other uses and possibilities. In moving from placing a telephone call to talk about a situation, society is now texting their way through daily activities and responsibilities.

The simplicity technology and the Internet have brought to the forefront of communication and socialization makes it easy for the majority of society to contact individuals. In fact children as young as three years old know how to use a Kindle Fire, iPad, iPhone, and how to access the Internet. The problem which is associated with children accessing the Internet has been a major concern by individuals and organizations who believe parents have failed to monitor their child’s behavior.

There seems to be little to no consistency in what parents will monitor their child’s behavior an

d which one will not. Placing safeguards in place seems to be a lack of understanding and concern about the ‘potential’ damage which can occur without setting rules, guidelines, and discipline of their children.

The new technology has brought about a gaming and daring attitude which sometimes becomes too competitive. The gaming of the video games between friends has turned to gaming and daring gaming on the Internet. The difference between the television used for playing games and the Internet has moved the gaming from friends to strangers, competing for who can play the game the best. A title many individuals compete to have and daily challenges the next friend and foe to obtain or maintain a ‘geek’ status.

Who defines the context of what usage is appropriate and who monitors just how much time, energy, and effort should society put into utilizing techno gadgets? There is no one monitoring these aspects of each individual’s time, energy, and effort someone should expend on the Internet. Should there be a time limit on the usage of techno gadgets, access to the Internet, and access to sexual ‘pleasure zones’? President Obama wants to limit the way society uses the Internet. He wants to be able to control every aspect of the usage of the way society utilizes the Internet and most importantly he wants control of everyone’s lives. The argument for this control is to stop crime on the Internet e.g. pornography, fraud, and pedophilia, and so forth.

If you try to find validation in President Obama’s concepts there may not be a concern about the idea that people over use techno gadgets and the Internet. The analogy would be since there are so many obese people there should be food guards at the checkout counter to ascertain and control what people are buying and eventually eating. The same holds true with utilization of techno gadgets and the Internet. So do we have an obesity problem when it comes to techno gadgets and the Internet, should we allow the government to dictate what society should buy, how many techno gadgets should people own, how much should they use them, and will there be a ‘Internet Guard’ monitoring every move individuals make?

The complexity of technological and sexual addiction isn’t something which should be taken lightly. There is no doubt that the ever expanding use of techno gadgets, Internet, and sexual ‘pleasure zones’ will become a dependence problem which there will be no way to turn back the clock.

If the government gets involved as it appears they will, maybe indirectly the addiction to techno gadgets, Internet, sexual ‘pleasure zones’ will change the behavior of the world. Sooner or later the powers to be, whoever they are, will either allow society to continue in the direction it currently is heading or maybe just maybe the scientists using studies, research, and experience will find a connection to educate those who utilize technology and sexual ‘pleasure zones’ that there should be a moderate consumption of usage.

Only time will tell and until then, the studies and research may dictate what is healthy and what is not. As society experiences all of the new technology, Internet, and sexual ‘pleasure zones’ protect the children and keep them safeguarded against those who want technological and sexual addicts to be successful in the lifestyle they count on and where they assist and perpetuate those who have addictive personalities coming back.

As this series concludes, take the time and reevaluate if you are taking the steps to insure your children are safe and there are safeguards in place which protect and stop the vicious cycle which victimize not only children, but adolescents, young adults, and adults.
